Footballer Wayne Rooney had to be rescued from the motorway after he filled up new wife Coleen's £90,000 car with the wrong kind of fuel.

The 23-year-old called out a motorway patrol after after the car broke down on a motorway in Cheshire on Monday evening.

He was traveling eastbound on the M62 when he had to pull into the hard shoulder in the £90,000 customised Range Rover Sport V8.

He had filled up the tank of the turbo-diesel engine with unleaded petrol.

It is thought Manchester United striker Rooney was alone in the car and was heading back to his home in Prestbury after visiting his family in Liverpool when the incident happened in the evening rush hour.

One motorist who passed the scene said: 'It's a very busy section of the motorway and the traffic was running quite slow so we got a good look.

'The hazard lights were flashing on the car and Wayne was standing talking to a Highways Agency patrol driver. He looked pretty sheepish.

Rooney owns a string of luxury cars including a Lamborghini Gallardo, Bentley Continental GT, BMW M6 and Aston Martin Vanquish, with a joint value of more than £1million.

it is thought the cost of flushing the petrol out of the diesel engine and putting the 4x4 back on the road will be more than £1000.

The Highways Agency declined to comment on the incident.
